Our Board of Directors

  • Ray Kelly – Chairperson

    Until retirement Ray worked for An Post as a HR support manager. Ray previously served on the board of Ability West for twelve years including four years as chairperson and this is his second rotation as chairperson. He rejoined the board in April 2023. He is a parent and full-time carer to Andrew who is a service user at Ability West.

  • Anna Lawless – Board Director & Corporate Secretary

    Anna has a strong business acumen and currently holds the position of senior global supply chain manager for the Urology division at Boston Scientific, where she leads the laser therapies franchise. Anna joined the board in July 2023. Anna's sister, Mary, who is now 43 years old, has been receiving services from Ability West since she was 8 years old. Anna herself has been a dedicated volunteer for over 30 years at Ability West and has been serving as a Best Buddy to her friend Cait Mulkerns for more than 15 years.

  • Kevin Newell - Board Director

    Kevin is Managing Director of Prevos Solutions, a managed IT services provider to SMEs throughout Ireland. He has extensive volunteering and leadership experience, having served as president of the Oranmore Lions Club, as well as president of the Oranmore BNI Chapter. Kevin’s brother Michael also is one of the many people supported by Ability West.

  • Breda Dolan – Board Director

    A Galway native, graduate of Mary Immaculate College, Limerick and St. Patrick’s College, Dublin and a retired special school principal, Breda has recently joined the NABMSE team in the role of special school support officer. She has spent her entire career in the special education field and led a dynamic team for 26 years as principal of St. Joseph’s Special School, Galway. Breda joined the Board in 2016.

  • Jack King – Board Director

    Jack King is a retired banker with a background in finance and human resources. He is currently chair of Ability West finance committee. Jack re-joined the board in April 2023 having previously served as a board member of the audit and risk committee. A native of Westport, Co. Mayo, he is waiting patiently to bring “Sam” home!

  • Michael Finnerty – Board Director

    Michael worked in construction all his professional life for the last 56 years. He joined the board in 2017. Michael provides a lot of support to the building projects for Ability West and has also been a significant fundraiser for the organisation.

  • Anna Maria Barry - BOARD DIRECTOR

    Anna Maria Barry is a communications professional who enjoys working with teams – large and small, global, and local – to accomplish amazing things. Her experience and skills involve supporting brands, companies, and individuals to change the way they talk and enrich their messaging. She’s a team builder, a strategic thinker, and a tension cutter. She’s proud to be someone who people want to collaborate with. Anna Maria joined the Board in 2024.

  • KATHY MURPHY - BOARD DIRECTOR

    Until her retirment, Kathy worked at the University of Galway where she was Professor of Nursing. She has extensive experience in nursing education and in clinical practice in the areas of older peoples services and emergency department services.  She was part of the team who the developed Long-Stay care standards for within Ireland and was also on the National Steering Group for Dementia Care. Her research interests focused on quality of life of older persons and living well with dementia. Kathy joined the board of Ability West in June 2024.

  • UNA HIGGINS - BOARD DIRECTOR

    Una, joined the Board of Ability West in June 2024. Originally from Carlow, now calling Galway home for 20 years, Una has a strong regulatory background in risk and compliance. She is Secretary at Tuam Camogie for approximately 3 years and is a true GAA enthusiast.
