Fundraising & Events

Fundraising & Events Ability West relies on fundraising money to continue providing high quality houses and centres for people with intellectual disability. The majority of fundraising money is used for capital works – for example, in 2009, we completed building two respite houses; one for children and one for adults, located in Galway City. This was only possible because we were able to match funds provided by the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs and Pobal through the Dormant Accounts Scheme, with the money we have received from various fundraising events over the years. Even more recently, in 2010 we completed an adult day and respite centre in Mountbellew. This centre was built solely from fundraising money which was as a result of the great efforts of many families, friends and volunteers across the county. Fundraising money is also used to purchase essential aids, appliances, specialised equipment for service users, and buses which play a critical role in ensuring service users can participate fully in community activities. Some fundraising activities organised in 2010 were: • Golf Outings • Vintage Rally • Swap Til U Drop • Quiz Night • Croagh Patrick Climb • Choir Singing • Sponsored Beard Shave • Coffee Mornings • Sponsored Walks/Treks • Church Gate Collection • Christmas Street Collection • Christmas Draw There are many other activities/challenges that can be undertaken – see our A – Z for ideas!
