February the 14th proved to be not just a special day in terms of romance but one for celebration as one of our Home Sharing families Maureen Mahon celebrated her 80th birthday and 30 years providing support as a Home Sharing Family. he Home Sharing service is run jointly between Ability West and the Brothers of Charity Galway. Home Sharing is where a family in the community offers short breaks or full-time shared living to adults and children with intellectual disability.
Maureen Mahon first became involved with Home Sharing with her late husband Mick in 1986 and has since, along with her four children, welcomed many guests into her home, providing valuable support, care and friendship along the way. Sadly, Maureen's husband Mick passed away a number of years ago but Maureen credits home sharing with helping her deal with her grief and keeping her busy.
Maureen’s role as a Home Sharing family has had a hugely positive impact on the lives of many people who avail of Ability West services and their families. Maureen has been hosting Brian O’Connor for almost 25 years and has been hosting Padraig McDonagh for over 15 years. The importance and joy of being a Home Sharer is clearly something the whole family has a passion for as some of Maureen’s own children and their families went on to become involved in Home Sharing also.
Home Share Galway is extremely thankful to Maureen for her commitment and involvement with the scheme over the past 30 years. Maureen's dedication to all of her guests over the years and the friendships that she has developed both with her home sharing guests and with the Home Sharing team is greatly admired and appreciated.
